Edible Lubricant Taste Test - Some Are Bad, Some Good

Edible Lubricant Taste Test

Introduction:

We conducted a taste test of edible lubricants. It sounds like a really stupid thing to do, but ShopInPrivate.com is one of the only sites that would ever do it and some of these flavors sound too good to be true.

Since we began in 1998 we have made it a point to expose phony adult products while crediting truly effective ones. By offering honest advice we help our customers avoid the embarrassment of a failed purchase. After all, helping customers avoid embarrassment is what we do.

Edible Lubricants - What are they?

Personal lubricants exist in a number of different packages and are marketed in many different ways. While the packaging varies from feminine to raunchy you can classify all of them into three different categories:

  • Edible Lubricants - Edible lubricants include (almost always artificial) flavorings. The purpose of these flavorings is to make them palatable. If you read the packages they sound delicious. Flavors on the market include Sun Ripened Strawberry, Chocolate-Raspberry, Passion Fruit even Orange-Mango, and Raspberry Kiss.
  • Digestible Lubricants - I suppose some companies acknowledge that certain products don't taste good but are in fact edible. Sometimes they use the term "Digestible" to signify this. As almost any product that can be used in and around the vagina is digestible, normal lubricants fall into this category.
  • Non-edible Lubricants - Recently, some silicone based lubricants have been introduced. These lubricants have the advantage that they do not dry out like most edible (water based) lubricants. Silicone lubricants are also condom and sex toy compatible unlike some (oil based) digestible lubricants. Unfortunately, Silicone lubricants are not digestible. Are they poisonous? No. They are inert. I imagine you could probably eat them in the same way you can swallow your gum.

Warming Lubricants - Lubricants with Warming Sensation

Many flavored lubricants also mention that they provide a "warming sensation". Some say that they warm to the touch and heat up when you blow on them. To anyone who has felt an uncomfortably cold breeze at the wrong time this certainly sounds appealing. In fact, the sensation is desirable to many. Although the lubricants don't actually produce heat, they feel as if they do and the sensation is pleasant. It is similar to standing under a heat lamp in a cold bathroom or using a warmed hand towel before a meal at a Japanese restaurant.

For years people have used warming lubricants to enhance lovemaking. I imagine that some folks probably find the sensation to be a little too much, but others enjoy it. Recently, the K-Y company has introduced a warming lubricant similar to products that adult industry has offered for years. This is a good sign, suggesting that products can be used for this purpose and encouraging more people to do so. We will make an effort to rate the amount of warming sensation provided by each lubricant. You can decide what may be right for you.

Taste Test - How do they rate?

The following table gives individual rating for over 30 different edible lubricants. The rating is based on a 0-10 scale where zero represents something that is truly inedible (like dirt), a 10 rating would taste exactly like fresh fruit. For reference, we decided that a Jolly Rancher brand candy would be a 9. The ratings here will be significantly less than 9 for most edible lubricants.

 Warming
Kama Sutra Oil of Love - Original Spice Flavor

 2

Wow, the first product we review and it is completely terrible. We suspected as such. We have received returns for this product based upon its poor taste. It is spice flavored but even the best cook among us couldn't discern the flavor. Take our advice and avoid this one.

 High
Oil of Love - Raspberry Kiss

6

This warming lubricant has a pleasant flavor similar to a red lollipop. A blind tester couldn't pinpoint it as raspberry but everyone agreed that it tasted like red.

Moderate
O.O.L. - Vanilla Creme

5

Tastes like cough medicine flavored like yellow cake batter.

Moderate
O.O.L. - Chocolate Mint

5.5

The mint and chocolate flavors hide some of the aftertaste.

High
Motion Lotion - Strawberry

6

Milder than the Kama Sutra brand (all of the motion lotion flavors were moderately mild).

Moderate
Motion Lotion - Big Banana

 6

This is the mildest flavor lubricant we sampled. I guess banana isn't a very strong flavor and this one is quite mild.

Moderate
Motion Lotion - Orange

6

Pinkish in color with a mild flavor. Nothing special

Moderate
Motion Lotion - Lemon/Lime

7

The taste is similar to flat Sprite.

Moderate
Motion Lotion - Passion Fruit

6.5

Not offensive, just very, very sweet. May become too sweet over time, we were just sampling though so it scored well.

Moderate.
Motion Lotion - Hot Strawberry

6.5

Smells good, but not much flavor. Smells similar to strawberry bubble gum.

Moderate
Motion Lotion - Raspberry

6

Mild, not much flavor.

Moderate
Motion Lotion - Grape

6

Tastes like Dimetapp. Which is not very sexy.

Moderate
Motion Lotion - Coconut

6.5

This tastes like suntan oil smells. If you like that smell, this one is for you.

Moderate
Motion Lotion - Hot Passion

7

Sweet flavor with more intense warming than other products.

High
Wet Fun Flavors - Tropical Fruit

6

Mild flavor, similar to red cool aid

Light - Moderate
Wet - Pina Colada

Light and sweet flavor

Moderate
Wet - Kiwi Strawberry

7.5

Sweet and mild, not unpleasant

Light - Moderate
Wet - Mango Orange

6

Mild. The mango or orange flavors are barely discernible.

6.5

Mild. This has a hint of pineapple.

Light - Moderate
Wet - Passion Fruit

6.75

Slightly better than the Motion Lotion version

Light - Moderate
Wet - Cinnamon

7.5

Milder than big red chewing gum, but nice.

Light - Moderate
ID Glide - Watermelon

6.5

A very mildly flavored lubricant. It is very slippery, quite a bit thicker than the above products and is clear in color. The other products are the thickness of baby oil, the ID products are the thickness of shampoo.

None
ID Glide - Cool Mint

6.5

Very minty. Doesn't taste particularly great, but the mint flavor would probably mask any unpleasant ones.

None
ID Glide - Chocolate Raspberry

6.5

Tastes fine, but it might be gross after a while. The flavor is a little too much.

None
ID Glide - Passion Fruit

4.5

A little too mediciney for us.

None
ForPlay - French Vanilla

7.5

Tastes good, like vanilla cake batter. this product is a lubricant like the ID Glide. One of the best of the products we tested.

Light
Hot Stuff - Cinnamon

6.5

Good cinnamon flavor, not hot but does create a tongue tingle.

High
Edible Body Paints

3

Ugh! This stuff is terrible. If you need body paint, it'll work. If you need something edible, look elsewhere.

None
Nipple Nibblers - Sun Ripened Strawberries

 4.5

This a wax-like product that has a menthol-like quality. It is supposed to tingle the nipples (this attribute was not included in this test). We didn't like the flavor much and this product tingled the mouth like a Hall's cough drop.

Doesn't taste good, instead it is a little chalky.

What to buy and why?

While we haven't included every product available to every person, we have completed what we believe is the largest independent study of edible lubricants in existence. Here are our suggestions:

The two assortments are good bets. The single use pillow-packs are convenient to use, properly sized, and the assortments provide a variety of flavors. Both the Motion Lotion and Wet Fun Flavors assortments include well rated flavors. We suggest them. We also suggest any of the products that scored over 7 points in our rating system. If you like a particular flavor we suggest trying to find the Wet Fun Flavors version. Wet brand lubricants consistently scored better than the others. Here the are:
