Introduction:

We conducted a taste test of edible lubricants. Locking yourself in a conference room and taste-testing 20 different flavored lubricants, isn't your typical workday. Then again, ShopInPrivate.com isn't your typical store. We not only sell edible lubricants, but we want to be able to answer your questions about embarrassing items, without you having to ask anyone. That's what we do. We save you embarrassment.

Besides, after reading the labels and names of these lubes we became increasingly skeptical. Some of the flavor names were way to good to be true. Personal lubricants couldn't possibly taste like a Sun-Ripened Strawberry could they? We were about to find out. Our goal is to offer honest advice, selling product can be secondary. So here is the honest truth about the taste of edible personal lubricants:

Edible Lubricants - What are they?

Personal lubricants exist in a number of different packages and are marketed in many different ways. While the packaging varies from feminine to raunchy you can classify all of them into three different categories:

• Edible Lubricants - Edible lubricants include (almost always artificial) flavorings. The purpose of these flavorings is to make them palatable. If you read the packages they sound delicious. Flavors on the market include Sun Ripened Strawberry, Chocolate-Raspberry, Passion Fruit even Orange-Mango, and Raspberry Kiss.
• Digestible Lubricants - I suppose some companies acknowledge that certain products don't taste good but are in fact edible. Sometimes they use the term "Digestible" to signify this. As almost any product that can be used in and around the vagina is digestible, normal lubricants fall into this category.
• Non-edible Lubricants - Recently, some silicone based lubricants have been introduced. These lubricants have the advantage that they do not dry out like most edible (water based) lubricants. Silicone lubricants are also condom and sex toy compatible unlike some (oil based) digestible lubricants. Unfortunately, Silicone lubricants are not digestible. Are they poisonous? No. They are inert. I imagine you could probably eat them in the same way you can swallow your gum.

Warming Lubricants - Lubricants with Warming Sensation

Many flavored lubricants also mention that they provide a "warming sensation". Some say that they warm to the touch and heat up when you blow on them. To anyone who has felt an uncomfortably cold breeze at the wrong time this certainly sounds appealing. In fact, the sensation is desirable to many. Although the lubricants don't actually produce heat, they feel as if they do and the sensation is pleasant. It is similar to standing under a heat lamp in a cold bathroom or using a warmed hand towel before a meal at a Japanese restaurant.

For years people have used warming lubricants to enhance lovemaking. I imagine that some folks probably find the sensation to be a little too much, but others enjoy it. K-Y makes a warming lubricant similar to products that adult industry has offered for years but it isn't flavored. We actually prefer some of adult brands like Wet Fun Flavors. Because KY Warming Lubricant isn't edible, you won't find it mentioned in the this comparison. We'll only review warming, edible lubes here.

Taste Test - How do they rate?

The following table gives individual rating for over 40 different edible lubricants. The rating is based on a 0-10 scale where zero represents something that is truly inedible (like dirt), a 10 rating would taste exactly like fresh fruit. For reference, we decided that a Jolly Rancher brand candy would be a 9. The ratings here will be significantly less than 9 for most edible lubricants because many of them don't taste very good. We'd use anything better than a 6, but now that we have sampled 30 different edible lubes our expectations are low.

Hot Licks - Cookies and Creme	7.5	Has a sort of coconut flavor. (Lynn says something)...Yeah, it tastes like Macaroons.	Tastes like something...It tastes like Macaroons. Motion Lotion - Pillow Pack - Sampler	7.5	These are good. they warm a little and don't taste bad.	I like that it is a sampler because I would get tired of a giant bottle of one flavor.	I agree that a sampler makes sense. This one has 12 packs, I can't imagine using one flavor twelve times.	We suggest a sampler pack of edible lube as a great alternative to a bottle of it.
ID Juicy Lube - Wild Cherry	7	Tastes like a red lollipop, no real aftertaste.	Tastes like cherry nyquil. No aftertaste	Sweet like cough medicine.	Lynn didn't even rinse her mouth after this lube because it finished cleanly.

Sweetened Blow - Watermelon Flavor	7	Light in flavor, with a little bit of Jolly Rancher flavor but very little flavor.	Doesn't have much flavor, like a watermelon flavored flavored-water. Forplay Cherry	5.5	The bottle is drippy and nasty with this one. The flavor was light.	My tongue was irritated by this one (Tom's was too).	Sweet with a little bitter aftertaste.	We discontinued this flavor after the test.

Booty Parlor - Skin Honey	5	I don't like Chaie so this tastes like potpourri to me. Maybe Lynn or Mike have something good to say.	I love Chai and I saw this stuff at Victoria's Secret so I was impressed, but this stuff is bitter. I had high expectations from the nice packaging but my hopes were dashed.	Kinda sweet and herbacious.	The packaging is very nice.
Wicked Wax - Edible Massage Oil Candle - Strawberry	5	This is a candle you burn and the molten wax is edible. It was mealy and waxy.	It had a light flavor and a strange tongue feel. Coated my tongue.	Sweet with a little bitter aftertaste. It is gooey.	It took about 2-3 minutes of burning to get enough molten wax to sample.
Swede - Sparkling Strawberry Wine Lubricant	4.5	Wine? This tastes like someone had a bad aftertaste they needed to kill and wine falvor did it best.	This lube tastes like something bitter that tastes like wine.	I can see where they get the "wine" from. It tastes more like wine than strawberry.	The bottle is super-cool, but the lube isn't.
Kama Sutra Oil of Love.- Vanilla Creme	4.5	Tastes like cough medicine that has been given cotton candy flavor by a tongueless chemist.	This actually has a vanilla flavor, after trying the other Kama Sutra oils of love, I am somewhat surprised by this.	I think this is the best Kama Sutra Love Oil.	Moderate Warming.

Nipple Nibblers - Sun Ripened Strawberries	4.5	This a wax-like product that has a menthol-like quality. It is supposed to tingle the nipples (this attribute was not included in this test). Kama Sutra Oil of Love - Raspberry Kiss	4	I don't like the Kama Sutra ones, but this one has some sweetness to it. Not raspberry though.	There is raspberry flavor but it tastes like Raspberry lotion. Kama Sutra Oil of Love.- Cherry Almond	4	This is the worst cherry lube we have tasted.	I need another word for bitter because all of these Kama Sutra oils are just bitter.	This one is bitter. The cherry flavor is like other lubes, but I don't taste almond.	Moderate Warming.
Dickalicious - Strawberry	4	Tingly, not a great flavor, but I bet this feels good on your unit!	Dang! That's fuckin' sick. I put a lot in my mouth, big mistake. You'll have to use this stuff sparingly.	Another cough drop type of thing. Menthol.	Heavy Tingling
Kama Sutra Oil of Love - Chocolate Mint	3.5	Tastes like a dirty mint leaf and a tootsie roll.	Faux chocolate, a hint of mint. Not good.	The artificial chocolate isn't bad, but I don't like this.	Moderate Warming
Kama Sutra Oil of Love - Original Spice Flavor	3	This is fucking vile. I knew it would be awful because we have received returns for this product based upon its poor taste.	(makes a yuck face). Then, speechless. "Really bad, not fruity, not spicy. It tastes like something you shouldn't be eating, like cosmetics or paint or something.	This is so hard to define. Has an oily? taste like cooking oil? It isn't good, but I don't find it vile. I don't like it though, not as bad as I thought it would be.	Moderate Warming.
Tasty Twist - Mint Chocolate Chip	2	Ugh! Tastes like milk of magnesia. It is pummeling my tastebuds.	Whoa! Whoa! This might be the worst thing I have put in my mouth all day!	Coats your mouth in funk. That aftertaste is brutal	Moderate Tingling

Passion Potion	1.5	Crap! This tastes like toothpaste that was watered down with rubbing alcohol..	There is no way to describe this in a taste test because people don't eat things that taste like this.	Ew! This tastes like something you put into your car engine.	This product has been discontinued.
Play Pens - Edible Body Paint	DQ	These taste great! Are you sure these are lube? They taste like they have sugar in them? Oh, they do. Well, they are disqualified then.	Oh! Sour, but good, like a sour patch kid candy.	Wow. This is good. Does it have sugar? Lube can't have sugar in it, that's not safe to use internally.	Oops! These are not lubricant, these are body paints and they contain sugar. Disqualified (but yummy).

What to buy and why?

While we haven't included every product available to every person, we have completed what we believe is the largest independent study of edible lubricants in existence. Here are our suggestions:

Suggestion #1: Consider buying an edible lubricant assortment. These small single-use packs are great because you won't get tired of any one flavor. Also, they travel well and instead of having to clean up the bottle, you can just discard the pack. We like Motion Lotion the best so we strongly recommend the Motion Lotion Sampler.

Suggestion #2: If you do want to get a regular bottle of edible lubricant we suggest the Wet Fun Flavors 4 in 1 Brand. Seductive Strawberry Wet was the favorite of our testing panel, but Tropical Fruit was also rated highly.

Suggestion #3: If you are looking for a tingling lotion that is also edible, you'll have to compromise a little on taste, but we would suggest Sex Fifth Avenue (to put on a woman) or Dickalicious (to put on a man).
