I don’t know why, but the second I hear the word “itch,” I start to feel itchy. Everybody itches. Most people scratch. But the problem comes when you do both in excess. Mister Private can prevent you from destroying your skin.

You could be itching for a number of reasons. Maybe you need to take a shower. Maybe you need to take off that Velcro suit you’re wearing. Maybe you have a bug bite. However, maybe you have allergies, the chicken pox or just walked into a forest full of Poison Ivy. Those will necessitate a trip to the doctor.

For general itches, you should try a strong moisturizer or corticosteroid creams. Keep your hands off of the affected area. You can apply cool wet compresses or take an oatmeal (Aveeno) bath. Try to avoid scented soaps or laundry detergent. Wear cotton clothing and avoid substances that will irritate your skin like nickel, jewelry, perfume, cleaning products or cosmetics.

You may have a case of dermatitis. There are varying types of dermatitis, including eczema. A doctor can perform a patch test on your skin to better advise you on what treatment options you should pursue. Try a specially formulated eczema cream if needed.

Although itching and scratching can be the cause of numerous things, don’t panic. Chances are, if you apply a moisturizer and stop scratching, you’ll live.
