Many people have trouble staying awake at work. Maybe you're not sleeping well, or your job is boring you to death. Perhaps you work early and you're not a morning person, or you work the night shift and can't adjust to it. Unfortunately, most workplaces don't allow for nap time. But there are a few aids that can help you make it through. First off, make sure you're getting enough sleep. It's recommended that you get about eight hours of sleep. If you have trouble sleeping, make your bedroom into a haven. Make it a priority to buy a comfortable mattress and pillows, and soft sheets and blankets. Make sure the room is a nice, cool temperature. Run a fan if you like ambient noise. Lock your cat and your children out, and slap a snore strip on your partner's nose. Try chamomile tea or a glass of wine close to bedtime to mellow out. If you absolutely can't sleep, try melatonin or an over-the-counter sleeping pill. For incurable insomnia, see a doctor. If you're sleeping just fine, but still can't make it through work, try America's favorite drug: caffeine. Caffeine pills like Vivarin provide as much caffeine as a cup of coffee. Energy drinks often contain caffeine and give you the extra added jolt of B vitamins. If you'd rather get energized without crashing, try doing yoga stretches at your desk, or taking a brisk walk outside. Eat a piece of fresh fruit or a protein bar for a healthy rush of nutrients. Take a break and call a good friend for a laugh. Go into the bathroom and splash cold water on your face. If all else fails, stay alert and focused on your work tasks by bribing yourself with a new gadget or a great dinner. ![]()
