Sweating marks the apex of embarrassment. Believe meI wear a spandex suit all day long and any unsightly pit stains would prevent me from saving the day. When I was young Kid Private, I used to break a sweat any time I saw a cute girl, or if I got the answer wrong in class, or any time I thought too much about global warming. Normal amounts of sweating can be triggered by a number of things, including alcohol, caffeine, exercise, certain medicines, stress, heat, fever, infection, low blood sugar, menopause, an overactive thyroid and withdrawal from alcohol or narcotics. But sometimes a good deodorant or antiperspirant just wasnt enough for Mister Private.
|How To Prevent Excessive Sweating|
A person has two to four million sweat glands, and I think all of mine were working overtime. In fact, excessive sweating has a name, hyperhidrosis and it affects about 2% of Americans. It happens when your body sweats more than it needs to. Most people who suffer from excessive sweating have hand sweating, foot sweating, facial blushing and armpit sweating. Excessive sweating is typically genetic. There are several ways to treat it. First, you can try a prescription strength antiperspirant that contains aluminum chloride hexahydrate. You use the special stuff once each day for a week, and then once a week after that. Sometimes a doctor will prescribe an oral medication like Ditropan, Robinul or Probanthine, but they all have limited success rates.
Another option is Iontophoresis, a procedure in which an electric current runs through the skin using water. Iontophoresis is conducted with a machine and used for 10 to 20 minutes three times each week. Although it sounds like medieval torture, Ive heard that it isnt painful at all. A different option is Botox. Botox injections into the armpit can curb excessive sweating. The FDA hasnt yet approved this usage for Botox, but my super Mister Private vision tells me that some doctors are experimenting with it.
Lastly, you could turn to surgery. A thoracic symathectomy interrupts the nerves that cause sweating. While this method is effective, its also pretty risky and infrequently used. Mister Private suggests to love your body the way it is. Embrace your embarrassment, even if someone wont embrace you, because youre sweaty.
